Proberbly one of the best known sword used throughout europe in the 13th to 17th century is the long sword, with many different variations. Longswords are used for striking, cutting, and thrusting and ussually done by holding both hands. The longsword was a powerful and versatile weapon. All parts of the sword are used for offensive purposes, including the pommel and crossguard making it a pure weapon. Now Long Swords are ussually very basic looking, they resemble a cross. So I decided to draw the Long Sword in a much more fantasy like image.
Grip: The handle of a sword, usually made of leather, wire, bone, horn, or ivory.
Pommel: Refers to the finial, disc or knob which terminates the uppermost part of the hilt and which is opposite the blade.
Crossguard: It is the element of the hilt adjacent to and perpendicular to the blade, resembling a cross.
Langet: Refers to an extension of the cross-guard towards the blade, which overlies the base of the blade.
Forte: The lower portion on a sword blade which has more control and strength and which does most of the parrying.
Edge: This is the sharpened portion of the blade. A sword may be single or double-edged.
Fuller: A groove down the center of the blade, for strength and lightness, usually misnamed blood groove.
Fobile: The upper portion on a sword blade which is weaker but has more agility which does most of the attacking.
Point: The point is the end of the sword furthest away from the hilt. Most swords taper to a point at the tip.
Chape: The end cap of the sheath, it's the part that drags on the ground.
Sheath: Self-explanatory. It is the blades home when not in use.
Locket: The open part of the scabbard that the blade slides into and locks in place.
