Zanpakuto Tsuba Designs: Pt 10 by chioky Zanpakuto Tsuba Designs: Pt 10 by chioky
:star: The Zanpakuto Tsuba Index

The purpose of these drawings is to help swordmakers and propmakers. When it comes to making katana's or zanpakuto's most of the time the tsuba is the most unique part of the sword. The tsuba is what makes the zanpakuto a one of a kind. So I drew up these closely detailed and accurate measurements of these tsuba's. With these tsuba's they act as a reference when your going to attempt to make the sword. If you use a scene from a anime or manga to make use reference for your tsuba, it might be flawed. So I have saved you the trouble and drawn them all out clearly, with measurements so you can print and cut them out.

:bulletblue: Kenpachi Zaraki's Tsuba: The key reason why I, along with many other swordmakers cannot make this zanpakuto is becuase of the complexity of this Tsuba design. First its entirely 3D so this part is no longer swordmaking but sculpting. All the notches must line up pricesly on every side of the tsuba. This is by far the hardest tsuba I have ever come across and I doubt I could ever make this cleanly. I actually had trouble drawing this tsuba cleanly let alone attempting to make it.

:bulletblue: Yachiru Kusajishi's Tsuba: Well this is a flower tsuba design, cute. Firstly this flower a daisy, is suppose to have 5 equalateral sides however this was VERY HARD to draw. I tried drawing a 5 pointed star and a equalateral pentagon but it was so difficult to achieve the same angle for each 5 of the sides. So I had to settle with one of the petals of this flower tsuba design to be slightly longer then the rest which is aligned with the position of the blade. However this tsuba is pretty simple to do, thoug it is entirely made up of curves.

:bulletblue: Important Notes:

. ALL these guards slide into swords with a thicnkess of 5 mm and 30 mm long, there are some exceptions.
.The parrallel lines are the rims of the guards that you cut out of balsa wood and glue onto the main guard.
.Download the full version, then copy and paste it, print it off then cut it out with scissors.
.Once it the paper tsuba is cut out, then draw around it with a pencil on the wood, then cut it out to finish.

Here is a 3D model of Kenpachi Zaraki's Tsuba. Can be 3D printed in a number of materials. [link]

Sorry, I have just read the rest of this thread and noticed the Tsuba is not round with twelve notches but oval with sixteen. Back to the drawing board.

Make it in metal its way easier. wood is only hard.

Ive began mine(in wood). i just have to cut it there and there and its done. :D (it helps to have an uncle who makes piano foots, lots of knowledge)

in metal it's just plain easier.

I am going to start Kenpachi's after the one I'm on. I'm still figuring out how to do this. I have some ideas.

The dimensions have to be perfect so that each wooden segment fits together like an orange XD

It's not just the dimensions it's all the angles too. To add to the problem I have determined that how they show it in the mangas is physically impossible.

would it be considered cheating if:

A person had drawn out the tsuba perfectly well on a computer program, then simply run that file into a computer aided machine to lazer cut it into place perfectly? XD

I wouldn't even know how to begin. I found some pictures of a metal Ken sword but It still looks too complicated. It looks like the notches go around the guard in a circular pattern.

That metal version is a metal replica, what the tsuba design REALLY looks like is, it is not circular but oval like

a tip for Kenpachis tsuba, just like with metal *wich i work* take a lump of wood/metal, take a wood/metal grinder, and carve it out SLOWLY, DELICATLY, DECICIVLY, first, shape it into a (for lack of a better term) reverce hourglass, then use a pickgrinder as i call it, just some grinder that does details, then add the grooves. how you can get the blade through it, burn out the middle with a red hot peice of metal in wich your able to blow out the ashes. as for me ill have to split it in 2 T_T so ill have to be even more careful. my veiws may be simplisteic, but when it comes to engenearing and building. simple is best, you agree? *takes a well deserved breath* i actually said it all in one whack like it sounded.

i was trying to make zarakis tsuba and after some time i realized that it isnt based on a circle (althou you can find a replica on the net that was based on a circle and it looks kinda crapy) could you look at this pic and tell me which one would you say is the most possible? [link] i think the last one is the most similar but im not sure - any suggestions?

now when I look at kenpachis tsuba I sometimes see that the tsuba might not actually be a circle aswell more like a flatter version like the last one in the picture. Its just that is ALOT more difficult to make but it has the most complex geometry out of all of them

How the hell are we gonna make Zaraki's tsuba? In the manga I already saw that it's complex, but I never though that it can be this crazy! Oh well! Better get to work. Thanks a lot for your design, Yachiru's tsuba looks really cute ^^
