A Droplet of Light, that is the name for my major project in my subject Graphic Products that I have been working on in the last few weeks. My major project specified I had to create a product based on the theme of "light" So I decided to make a lamp shade. Continue reading for the details:

When I thought of "light" I considered the elements which affected it the most and I decided "water" When it rains soon afterwards if there is a bright sunny day a rainbow appears. I analysed the aspect of water and I came up with the idea of a water droplet. So I combined the aspect of water with light to create a lamp shade. The material I used is acrylic for its optical propeties. Now to create the tear drop I used the example of getting a piece of A4 paper, I brought the sides to meet and
pinched the top. When looked at a side angle it resembled the shape of a tear drop.

Acrylic is a thermoplastic which has propeties to be allowed to shape in that way. In my school we lacked the proper machinery to bend plastic into round curves, we can do straight curves but not round curves. So what my teacher did was pop the piece of acrylic in his home oven and waited till it reached its plasticity point. Then he takes it out of the oven and has 30 seconds to put it around the mould. He did burn his hand bless him.

The flourescent light bulb is kept in place by a light bracket which can be seen in the top middle picture. The bulb has enough space around it to avoid heating the acrylic. There are holes in the sides too allow light through. Now when you look at my lamp shade to the side where the tear drop shape is, that is where all the light that is concentrated in this tunnel like lamp shade. This can be best shown in the center photo where you have the outline of a tear drop painted in pure light. And since its suspended from the celing its raining glowing light.

Finnaly an unexpected optical display appeared. On the bottom middle picture shows the blue light display projected onto my ceiling. I call this effect "blue matrix" if this photo was closer, you can see all the holes along the side throw the light out, at a certain angle. This optical effect reaches all the way out in my celing and is cool.
